For Sale: 1985 Mongoose ATB Pro
I'll make this quick. Now that the Octocog has gears, I really don't have much use for the bike pictured above. It's a classic 1985 Mongoose ATB Pro. Fully chromed frame. Seat-tube is 19" center to center. Top-tube is 22". Old-school slack geometry, makes a this great fire-road touring bike. Suntour thumb-shifters & deraillers. Suntour/Cunningham Powercam brakes. I got rid of the original wheels and the brakes now have Koolstop pads. That stuff isn't original but it works great. The bike now has coroplast fenders and a Blackburn rear rack.
I'm short on space and cash so the bike is going to finance my next human-powered, wheeled acquisition (hint, it's not a bike!)
$225. I'd prefer to sell the bike to somebody in the Seattle area, but if you have to have this bike and live elsewhere, let me know and maybe we can work something out.
Keep 'em rolling,
Kent

nice bike but im short on cash too. prolly the economy, right?
lemme guess u got the xooter?
Hint..it's not a bike.
Could this be a revival of that crazy recumbent you had that was all welded tubes and enclosed? I remember reading about that monster in RCN back in the day.
Really? $225 for a 1985 hardtail? Wouldn't you really be fortunate to give this away and not have to pay somebody to take it?
I'm not being a a-hole. I've sold about 65 bikes on Craigslist, from cheap hardtails to $3500 scandium and carbon fiber bikes, and can tell you that you'd be better off donating this one to BikeWorks or some other charity.
Hi Anonymous,
Thanks for your concern and the reminder that I should update this post. I recently sold the Mongoose.
For $225.
I'm so glad you've managed to sell about 65 bikes on Craigslist. Over the years I've managed to buy, sell & give away some more bikes than that and I tend to think I have a decent understanding of markets and value.
Have you read this article:
http://nyti.ms/dmsf7Z
It's a year old, but it describes the Portland/Seattle/Vancouver area pretty well.
Have you hung out on the iBOB list at all? Do you know what a set of good Suntour Power Ratchet shifters go for these days? How about Cunningham brakes?
Even ignoring collector worth of a bike or components, bikes like this Mongoose have a lot of value to folks for commuting, touring or back country adventure. We sold many good bikes mountain bikes without without shocks for just such purposes when I was the shop manager at Bike Works. I'm sure they still sell a bunch of them. I think the average selling price was right around $225 and we weren't ripping anybody off.

Anon is looking out for you Kent, since you are fairly new to the biking world and all. :)
Hello, proud owner of a neat bike. i've been looking for a bike like this, and although 225 is a bit steep, if you are still trying to sell this bike, i'm interested. not exactly sure what the bike frame height is - somewhere around 21" or 22"? I'm a size large (plus a few pounds), and just want to make sure this bike will fit me. I'm also out of state, but like I said, If you're still trying to sell it, I'll still try to buy it. Shoot me an email at octopusinkfoot@hotmail.com, we'll chat.
thanks,
Damian
Sorry Damian,
The Mongoose is sold.

I had one of these, sold it off in the late 80s to buy a cannondale, relocated it twice, but never had the money at the time. I'd give my left one to have her back in the stable alongside my old PK Ripper. I still have piece of the XC pro shifter and roller cam brakes.
Just goes to show you that mongoose mountain bikes
can last a long time as long as you take good care of them.
