A Bike Commute is a Happy Commute

According to an article in the Globe and Mail, more Canadians like their commute than loathe it. And "those who bike to work are the employees who enjoy their commute the most, the study found." Read the story here:

I wish I could say that I was one of those happy commuters. To be more accurate, I wish I could use the present tense. My commute to work
was a 35 mile round trip that frequently left me wishing I didn't have to get off the bike when I got to work or home.

Was. That is the operative word. Was until today. My company is closing it's Alameda, CA office and I am to work from home from now on. Ugh. I want to ride to work in a diffent neighborhood and city, and I want to work with other people.

Crap. That's all I can say.

Thanks for posting this Kent. I am one of those Canadians that enjoys the commute into work on my bike. It's a 45km round trip and often I wish that it were longer. Of course on those cold, windy, rainy/snowy days I also wish that it were shorter. But I can't think of a time that I wished that I hadn't cycled to work/home. Love reading your blog...

    Rob,

I work from home and love to commute by bike. I have used 2 strategies. Last year I rented a small office space (just a desk sublet with internet access) about 7 miles from home. That commute was the best part of my day, and it placed me around other people and right in the center of my small city (Bloomington, Indiana).

Now I've moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, and instead of a distant office, I have a relatively distant post office box—all my mail is delivered there—, to and from which I bike every morning, guaranteeing me at least half an hour on the bike each work day.

Of course, I also take my laptop out and work from coffee shops and the like. There are lots of options in my field (software development).
